Abstract
The main aim of this study was to explore the mental health status of grade 9 learners in the Ekurhuleni District of Gauteng that display aggressive behaviours. To achieve the aim of the study, the researcher employed qualitative methods of research whereby a multiple case study design was used. Individual interviews, semi-structured questionnaires, focus interviews and collages were used as data collection methods. A total of nine grade 9 learners formed part of the sample for this study. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the collected data from the participants. The results indicate that several risk and resilience factors contribute to the mental health of grade 9 learners. Some of the risk factors are neglect, emotional and sexual abuse. Resilience is noted in individual, family, and community factors. Adopting a bioecological systems theoretical framework, several recommendations, based on the findings, are made on how to support grade 9 learners who display aggressive behaviours.
