In the society, single mothers experience aggression from their adolescent sons. They
are subjected to physical and verbal assaults. However, this should not be happening
since The Constitution of The Kingdom of Swaziland (2005:23 -28) states that "women
have a right to equal treatment with men and the right shall include equal opportunities in
political, economical and social activities". The objectives of this study were as follows : to
explore and describe the lived experiences of single mothers of aggressive behaviour by
their adolescent sons and to describe guidelines that can be utilised by the psychiatric
nurses to assist mothers to mobilise resources to facilitate their mental health.
The research design followed was qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual in
nature. Phenomenological in-depth interviews were conducted, also observation and field
notes were used as means of data collection. Tesch's method of data analysis was used.
An independent coder helped the researcher to analyse the data.
In Phase one, four themes with various categories were identified, discussed and
supported by relevant literature control. Phase two described guidelines to be utilised by
psychiatric nurses to assist mothers to mobilise resources to facilitate their mental health.
The results of the interviews were in accordance with themes and categories. Stated
below are the four main themes which were identified from the data.
