Abstract
The construction industry contributes vastly towards the growth of a country’s economy. Construction as a whole is beneficial to society, but it can’t be ignored that construction activities have negative impacts on the environment as they contribute to the depletion of resources and the degradation of the environment. The negative impacts have created a need to incorporate sustainability in construction. This research aims to understand how sustainable construction practices impact aspects of project performance including project costs, construction time, and environmental impacts.
Questionnaires were distributed to construction industry professionals to gather their observations, thoughts, knowledge, and experiences on sustainable construction. The results demonstrated that adopting sustainable practices improves various project performance metrics which include project quality, project costs, and long-term financial benefits. The findings of this paper also demonstrated the social, financial, and environmental benefits of sustainable construction. Environmental benefits include improved energy efficiency, reduced waste, and reduced carbon emissions.
