Abstract
Social media technological platforms have become the most efficient communication method in human civilization, which can be said to come with many benefits but also concerns. This research study investigates the impact of cyberbullying on young adults, focusing on their perspectives and experiences. Information and communication technology (ICT) platforms and applications, particularly in the form of social networking media such as WhatsApp, X, Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram, have exacerbated the challenges associated with cyberbullying, allowing it to escalate in intensity and reach, without geographical constraints. The study seeks to investigate the repercussions of cyberbullying and to comprehend the emotional, psychological, physical, and social effects experienced by young adults, which frequently result in mental health issues and in extreme instances, suicide.
This quantitative study examines cases in which victims are afraid to speak out in public because of the humiliation and the threat of retaliation from the bully. The data collection method enables the participants who are victims of bullying to speak out anonymously and so confirm to the world that cyberbullying is real, and that people need help, although in most cases, they are unable to find it. Furthermore, the quantitative method allows the researcher to run a rigorous scientific analysis to validate the data and ensure accuracy.
The findings of this research study indicate that while it is impossible to eliminate cyberbullying, steps can be taken to reduce its prevalence. The purpose of this study was twofold: aiming to investigate participants’ viewpoints and through its results, to raise awareness about the reality of cyberbullying. The Recommendations are made to educate individuals on strategies to prevent cyberbullying and highlights behaviours to avoid on social media. Given the seriousness of the findings of this study, it is also recommended that technology companies collaborate in enhancing the security of social media platforms to diminish the frequency of cyberbullying incidents.
