Abstract

This study looks at the impact of introducing Len Six Sigma (LSS) on the hydraulic engineering sector in Gauteng, South Africa. With rising customer expectations, operational inefficiencies, and rising production costs, hydraulic engineering organizations are under increasing pressure to improve quality, productivity, and strategic performance. LSS is an approach that blends Six Sigma's defect-minimization techniques with Lean's waste-reduction ideas to provide a comprehensive framework for continuous improvement and operational excellence. A quantitative study design was used, with a structured questionnaire distributed to a sample of employees from a hydraulic engineering organisation. The data was analysed using descriptive statistics, factor analysis, reliability testing, correlation, and logistic regression to investigate the relationships between LSS implementation and four key dimensions: customer satisfaction, productivity and cost efficiency, business process management, and alignment with overall business strategy. The findings showed a strong positive correlation between effective LSS implementation and improvements in all four dimensions. Respondents generally agreed that LSS improves customer satisfaction by reducing defects and improving service delivery, increases productivity through automation and process optimisation, simplifies and strengthens business process management, and contributes to strategic agility and long-term organisational growth. While some participants demonstrated a limited understanding of LSS's strategic significance, the overall evidence supports the conclusion that LSS is an important driver of quality and competitiveness in the hydraulic engineering sector. This study emphasises the importance of wider acceptance and proper integration of LSS approaches in engineering organisations, particularly through continual employee training, management commitment, and alignment with organisational goals. The study adds to the expanding body of information on quality engineering and provides useful insights for industry practitioners looking to improve performance through structured improvement programs.
