Abstract
The way mathematics is taught now has undergone a substantial change because of the technology inventions that can be used for teaching and learning. GeoGebra, a dynamic mathematics software, has emerged as a versatile tool for teaching mathematical concepts. The experiences of mathematics teachers in Further Education and Training (FET) who have incorporated GeoGebra into their teaching methods are explored in this study, focusing on how these experiences can contribute to the design of effective teacher professional development programs. A qualitative research design was employed where face-to-face and online interviews with FET mathematics teachers who have incorporated GeoGebra into their pedagogical activities were used to collect data from ten participants for this study.
The findings suggest that FET mathematics teachers perceive GeoGebra as a powerful tool that enhances visual and conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts. The software facilitates interactive exploration and allows for real-time manipulation of mathematical objects, enabling learners to grasp abstract notions better. However, I identified challenges related to technology integration, teacher proficiency, and time constraints. This study contributes to the field by shedding light on the potential of GeoGebra to transform mathematics instruction in FET classrooms. The findings underscore the need for tailored professional development initiatives that address the technological, pedagogical, and content-specific aspects of GeoGebra integration. Understandings from this research can inform the design of future teacher training programs that empower teachers to harness the full potential of GeoGebra and similar dynamic mathematical tools. As education continues to evolve in response to technological advancements, this study stresses the importance of equipping mathematics teachers with the skills, digital resources into their instructional practices and ultimately enhancing the quality of mathematics education in the FET sector.
