Abstract
This research study delves into the experiences, challenges, and successes of community development practitioners (CDPs) working with cooperative projects within the Gauteng Department of Social Development. The primary aim of this study is to explore and understand the experiences of community development practitioners when working on cooperative projects at the Gauteng Department of Social Development. The study aims to shed light on the dynamics of cooperative projects, the role of CDPs, and the support systems in place. Drawing from a solid theoretical framework that includes community development theory, social development theory, and sustainable livelihoods theory, the study seeks to provide insights into enhancing the effectiveness of cooperative projects. The population and sampling criteria are described, along with the data collection methods and ethical considerations. The qualitative research method, using semi-structured interviews, was followed. The results of this study are presented as themes that emerged from the data analysis and offer a detailed discussion of the research findings. Experiences, challenges, and successes related to cooperative projects and the roles of CDPs are explored. The chapter concludes with potential solutions, successes and failures, and recommendations. Chapter 5 provides a summary of the study’s findings, with specific attention to each research objective. It draws conclusions based on the research findings and outlines implications for practice. The chapter culminates in a series of recommendations, including those derived from the literature and tailored suggestions for the Department of Social Development, policy development, community development practitioners, and future research studies. In conclusion, this research study offers valuable insights into the intricate world of cooperative projects within the Gauteng Department of Social Development. By exploring the experiences, challenges, and successes of CDPs, it provides a foundation for enhancing the effectiveness of cooperative initiatives, ultimately contributing to the betterment of communities and the realisation of sustainable livelihoods.
