Abstract
The purpose of this study was to detennine the efficacy of the homoeopathic remedy
Lacacum acidum 30CH in the treatment of chronic tension-type headache (CTTH).
According to Silberstein 1
, tension-type headache (TTH) is the most common form of
headache and has a lifetime prevalence of 69% in men and 88% in women.
Thirty-one subjects enrolled into the study, twenty-eight with CTTH and three with
episodic tension-type headache (ETTH). The study is a one-group pretest-posttest
design, i.e. this single group had a pre-experimental evaluation period, a period of test
stimulus administration and a post-experimental evaluation. All subjects received
Lacticum acidum 30CH during the experimental treatment phase. AU subjects were
evaluated by means of visual analogue scales (VAS) and the McGill - Melzack Pain
questionnaire (MPQ).
Analysis of the data obtained from the trial study revealed statistically significant
results. The intensity and frequency of headaches decreased during the treatment period
as compared with the observation period.
The remedy Lacticum acidum has proved efficacious in the treatment of CTTH. The
frequency and intensity mean scores were significantly reduced. The results of this
study warrant further investigation regarding potency selection, as the remedy may
prove to have more satisfactory results. The remedy Lacticum acidum can now be
validated as a remedy for CTTH and needs to be represented more widely in
homoeopathic literature. Further investigation regarding the mode of action of this
remedy now becomes apparent.
