Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has had an overwhelming impact on nearly every aspect of life. Social distancing was implemented throughout the world as a measure to manage the spread of the virus. Schools were closed in many countries with online education replacing face to face teaching and learning. This profound change occurred virtually overnight. This study uses a community of inquiry framework to investigate whether remote education salvaged the 2020 academic year. The current study analysed data collected from a sample of six teachers at a private school in China. Structured interviews were used to investigate their experience on the effectiveness of online schooling. This study demonstrates that remote learning prevented catastrophic educational failure, but quality of learning was sacrificed. The loss of deep learning will be consequential across the student cohort, far into the future.
