Abstract
Talent retention and employees’ organisational commitment are challenges in telecommunications industries across the globe. Retention factors are perceived as human resource management practices to discourage employees from leaving organisations. This study aimed to investigate the effect of retention factors on employees’ organisational commitment in a South African telecommunications company. A quantitative research design was followed, and a probability-stratified sample (n=207) of telecommunications professionals participated in the study.
The results revealed that retention factors predict organisational commitment. The results further suggest that organisational commitment is positively and significantly correlated with retention factors. Retention factors and psychological attachment behaviour revealed that most respondents were satisfied with their work-life balance and the supervisory support they received. Respondents were neutrally satisfied regarding compensation, training and development, and job characteristics.
A recommendation for employers is to reflect on their work-life policies; evidently, employees who are satisfied with the work-life policies are likely to be involved in and identify with the employer's goals and values. It appears that these extend their membership in the organisation.
