Abstract
Employee engagement has become the buzzword in many organisations where Human Resources play a critical role. People are an important asset to every organisation in terms of the contribution they make towards the organisation’s bottom-line. Many organisations engage in surveys on yearly or quarterly basis to track the engagement levels of employees with the view to curb turnover rate and financial losses. Organisations therefore always strive to make a study of the factors that make employees to stay with the company or leave. Therefore, knowing and understanding the drivers of employee engagement becomes an integral function of each organisation.
This research attempted to describe the drivers and levels of employee engagement in the North West province with a particular focus on the government departments. The research also gave an overview of the correlation between the drivers of engagement and the levels of engagement in the North West public service.
The following research objectives guided the course of this study:
To describe the drivers of employee engagement in the North West provincial government departments;
To describe the levels of employee engagement in the North West provincial government departments and
To describe the correlation between the drivers and the levels of employee engagement in the North West.
The research covered two departments in the North West province namely: the Department of Basic Education and the Department of Human Settlement. A survey using a questionnaire was administered to 234 participants of which 186 (79%) were returned. The quantitative research approach was employed in the study and the data collection also mirrored this approach. Data was analysed using the SPSS package.
