Heat transfer enhancement is currently a very popular field of research in heat
transfer engineering. Before an investigation of this nature can be performed a
suitable experimental set-up is needed to perform the experimental work. The object
of this study was to develop such an experimental set-up to be used in determining the
heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of the refrigerant condensing in the
inner tube of a tube-in-tube heat exchanger, with water flowing in the annulus. The
experimental set-up was built and experiments were conducted with water flowing in
the inner tube and annulus. From these readings heat transfer correlations were
derived for the water flowing in the inner tube as well as the annulus by using the
modified Wilson plot technique.
