Abstract
Water in South Africa is a scarce and important resource. The protection of this resource is of paramount importance as these freshwater aquatic systems support biodiversity which provides an array of services, contributing to the country’s economy. More importantly, living organisms depend on these systems for various reasons (habitat, feeding or reproduction). An aquatic system is composed of water, sediment and the organisms that depend on the system. Thus when assessing aquatic system health, it is important to include all these factors as these factors depend on each other to maintain a healthy system.
