The growing size and complexity of organisations have made it necessary to manage and influence large number of people towards a common goal. Strong leadership is imperative towards achieving this, and to overcome the challenges of the dynamic world. Coaching has emerged as a strategy for development aimed at aligning teams with organisational strategic objectives. It seems that the availability of well-practised guidelines on successful implementation of team coaching within organisations is scarce. It is therefore necessary to identify critical factors and challenges that are faced within an organisation in order to determine how to implement team coaching successfully. Qualitative research analysis was used to gain an in-depth understanding of the experiences and opinions of experts in the team-coaching field. The research strategy employed was a collective case study. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data.
Seven participants were selected based on two non-probability procedures: purposive and snow-balling sampling. Data was finally analysed using thematic analysis to identify the various themes that emerged. In order to integrate successful team coaching into any organisation one needs to study and effectively analyse the organisational context, leadership stakeholders, team effectiveness, competency of a coach and employee engagement. Constraints that could prevent successful implementation of team coaching were also identified. The outcome of the study resulted in the development of a conceptual framework to guide theory and practice of team-coaching implementation in the workplace.
