Abstract
This study investigates the practical application of sustainable finance in supporting rural agriculture in South Africa, with a specific focus on the perspectives of professionals directly involved in designing and implementing these financial solutions. Rural agriculture plays a vital role in food security, employment and local economic development. Yet, small-scale farmers remain largely excluded from formal financial systems due to structural barriers, such as limited collateral, a lack of financial history, and rigid documentation requirements.
To understand how sustainable finance works in the context of rural agricultural development, the research explores how instruments such as green bonds, social bonds, and sustainability-linked loans are being structured and implemented to meet the needs of rural agricultural development. A qualitative methodology was adopted, guided by constructivist and interpretivist paradigms, to capture the lived experiences and insights of twelve professionals in sustainable and agricultural finance. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed inductively using Atlas.ti.
Findings reveal that while sustainable finance holds significant potential to drive inclusive rural development, its practical deployment remains limited and often indirect. Instruments tend to favour urban infrastructure and large-scale projects, leaving rural agriculture underrepresented. Key challenges include bankability constraints, policy misalignment, short investment horizons, and fragmented value chains. However, promising innovations (such as blended finance models, satellite-based risk tools, and cooperative structures) offer viable pathways to enhance accessibility and impact.
The study contributes to both academic and practical understanding by highlighting the importance of stakeholder engagement, ecosystem collaboration, and context-sensitive financial design. It recommends strengthening internal collaboration within financial institutions, simplifying compliance frameworks and expanding public-private partnerships to scale sustainable finance in ways that reflect local realities and empower rural communities.
