Student nurse selection has been a topic of debate for many years. The question has always been how and what should be assessed during the selection process. The objective of student nurse selection is to select individuals who able to provide competent and caring nursing care to a population with varying demographics. As such, a meta-synthesis was conducted to determine what qualitative data is available on student nurse selection and develop recommendations based on the synthesised findings. Objective: The objectives of this research study were to compile, review and interpret dense evidence-based qualitative studies on student nurse selection to provide recommendations for nurse educators in selecting student nurses through a holistic, integrative process that promotes quality nursing care. Research design and method: A qualitative research design with a meta-synthesis method was implemented for this research. Sample: The research sample consisted of 13 qualitative research articles and one PhD dissertation. Results: The articles concluded many different selection methods are successful in selecting student nurses. The reliance of the interview was a dominant theme that was identified. A recommendation that was frequently associated with successful student nurse selection was the use of holistic admission processes. Conclusion: The recommendations identified from the synthesised data would be useful to further nursing research. Research is needed to determine the application and success of a holistic admission selection policy in South Africa.
