Abstract

Sustainable construction techniques, defined as methods that reduce environmental impacts, enhance social well-being, and assure economic sustainability, have become critical in the construction industry. Throughout the course of a project, these practices seek to improve resource efficiency, reduce waste, and promote long-term ecological balance. However, integrating these practices into project management remains a significant challenge, particularly in developing countries. This study investigates the key challenges hindering the effective implementation of sustainable construction practices and their impact on project management efficiency. A qualitative research approach was employed, utilizing structured interviews and a case study analysis. The study involved 31 participants, purposefully selected for their expertise and experience in sustainable construction practices. These participants included project managers, sustainability specialists, architects, and contractors from various organizations in the construction industry. Data collection was conducted through face-to-face and online interviews, depending on participants' availability and preferences. The data were analyzed using a combination of thematic and content analysis to identify patterns, quantify challenges, and derive insights. Findings highlight several barriers, including high initial costs, lack of expertise, and resistance to change, which impede the adoption of sustainable practices. The study also identifies strategies to overcome these challenges, emphasizing the need for greater awareness, stakeholder engagement, and government support. The results suggest that while sustainable practices offer potential benefits for project management, overcoming these challenges is critical to achieving long-term efficiency and sustainability goals. The research contributes valuable insights for both industry professionals and policymakers seeking to integrate sustainability into construction project management.
