Abstract
The aim of this study is to critically analyse the use of figurative language in the form of parallelism, rhyme and refrains employed in the selected hymns found in Lifela tsa Sione (2013) hymn book. Literary stylistics is the framework that supported the analysis and interpretation of literary texts found in the hymns. This theory encompasses concepts such as repetitive techniques, imagery and figures of speech to mention a few, that assist in disclosing literal meaning that are creatively hidden by the writer’s sense of style of conveying messages in a manner that is artistic. The text for analysis was found in the hymn book Lifela tsa Sione (2013), where repetitive devices such as parallelism, rhyme and refrains were the centre of the discussion. Qualitative method of research was utilised in this study to closely scrutnise text found in the Lifela tsa Sione (2013) selected hymns. The analysis of the hymns using the said repetition techniques exposed the skill and creativity possessed by the composers of the hymns. It was also discovered that the use of this forms of repetitive techniques creates an effect to the singers and listeners souls that enables the messages to be well received and understood on an emotional level. The use of this figurative language creates an unusual mode of expression that is accompanied by rhythm that effects harmony which soothes the singers and listeners souls. Thus, making the messages of Christianity to be complemented by the effects of rhythm. This analysis will also be beneficial to non-seSotho speakers who utilise Lifela tsa Sione hymn book in worship.
