Abstract
The issue of discipline is nothing new in South African schools. School leaders and teachers are faced with an ongoing problem of trying to maintain discipline in classrooms and schools in general. Several factors have contributed to the problem facing South African schools today. Factors such as lack of parental involvement, drugs, too many learner rights, overcrowded classrooms and lack of appropriate discipline strategies. The lack of discipline has a negative impact on schools as the pass rate is low and many teachers leave the teaching profession. Many school leaders and teachers feel disempowered as they feel that more rights are given to learners and they are not protected from the abuse that they get from the learners caused by ill-discipline.
