Abstract
In 2005, the National Energy Efficiency Strategy (NEES) was established to promote energy efficiency in South Africa, setting a national energy savings target of at least 12% to be achieved by 2015. As one of the largest energy users in the country, a sub sectorial target of a 10% reduction in energy demand was set for the mining industry in the Strategy’s first review in 2008. A 34.3% overall reduction in energy consumption has been reported for the industrial and mining sectors however, a decline in energy efficiency for specifically the mining sector is noted (Department of Energy, 2014; Department of Energy , 2015). Nine years after the establishment of the NEES, the Department of Energy (2014) reported that the procedures and protocols for the collection of the data from companies were still not completely determined. This dissertation therefore sought to scientifically explore these findings by using a Mpumalanga based coal mine as a case study...
