Abstract
In this research, the aim was to evaluate NUL Records Management practices alignment with the ISO 15489 2001 standard, and to make recommendations pertaining to their (practices) improvements. This work relied upon the stated research objectives for attaining the research aim. Categories, types and classes of the records created in NUL were also important to find out. Establishment of the present RM practices in NUL was also found significant in this research. It was also important to find out if the current practices and processes from the NUL were aligned to the ISO 15489 on Records Management. In the same manner, this study also found it necessary to establish the challenges facing the records keeping staff of the NUL in their daily work of managing the records. Lastly, this research intended to make recommendations as to how operations related to NUL records could be improved.
In order to carry out this study Interpretivism was used because it aimed at interpreting the different perspectives of the NUL’s records keeping staff with regards to the current Records Management practices. Qualitative research method using process evaluation approach was also adopted. The sample on whom this research was conducted composed of secretaries, assistant registrars, assistant administrators and personal assistants in different departments and faculties of the University. The study used a total sampling method where the whole sample frame is interviewed. Facts were collected through interviews using a predesigned interview schedule.
The conclusion based on the results was that NUL lacks proper overall structure for them to achieve useful creation, use and maintenance of their records. They need to device relevant laws and guides for their processes and procedures.
