Abstract

This minor dissertation critically examines the impact of Sudan's reservations to the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC) on the rights of girl children, particularly in relation to privacy, education and child marriage. Despite the existence of frameworks like the Sudanese Transitional Constitutional Charter of 2019 (STCC) and the Child Act of 2010 that provides for the right to education without discrimination, significant gaps remain in addressing the specific needs of pregnant girls and those at risk of child marriage. The analysis highlights how cultural and religious norms influence the government's reservations, which ultimately hinder the realisation of these children's rights. By exploring the intersection of privacy, education and child marriage, this work underscores the urgent need for comprehensive policies that protect and promote the rights of girl children in Sudan. The findings suggest that empowering girls through education not only fosters their personal development but also serves as a crucial tool in combating child marriage and protecting their privacy, thereby fulfilling both national and international obligations to uphold children's rights. This dissertation advocates for targeted legal and educational reforms that can dismantle systemic barriers, ensuring that all Sudanese girls have equal access to quality education and protection from harmful practices.
