Abstract
M.Ed. (Education)
It is conventional to think of teachers as being professionals.
This assumption may not be valid with regard to the majority of
Black teachers in South Africa. who do not satisfy the
requirements of an adequate body of knowledge and professional
qualification. In an attempt to solve the pressing problem of
unqualified and underqualified Black teachers, teacher training
at colleges of education and at universities is investigated,
with a view to uniformity and maintenance of academic standards.
The aim of this study is to ensure that teachers are more
professional in their approach in the classroom among their
colleagues, with the education authorities, and within the
organized teaching profession. The study also examines the
attitudes of teacher-trainees towards the teaching profession and
their reasons for choosing teaching as a career. Rigorous
training and in-service training could ensure that
teacher-trainees and teachers acquire professional qualities and
trait criteria require for professionalism.
