Abstract
The safety of learners at schools has become an alarming educational issue internationally and also in South Africa. The school principal, as professional manager, leader, head of the school and representative of the Department of Education at the school has an important and relevant role in facilitating school safety. In situations at schools where learners’ safety is at risk, the principal is one of the pivotal role players. The Department of Education has focused on making the school principal one of the important and responsible role players in securing the safety of learners at school. This is evident from The South African Standard for Principalship and The National School Safety Framework. Much of the research that exists on school managers focuses on policy rather than what principals actually do and experience at schools daily.
