Abstract
There has been an evolution in the approach to volunteerism and volunteering in non-governmental organisations. This influences how young people perceive volunteerism and volunteering in non-governmental organisations. The study focused on volunteerism and the perspectives of young people volunteering at a non-governmental organisation. This study aimed to explore the views of unemployed young people volunteering at a non-governmental organisation on volunteerism. The objectives of the study included exploring young people’s perspectives on volunteering and understanding why young people volunteer. Another objective aimed to explore the challenges and benefits of volunteering. The last objective was to make recommendations to welfare organisations on the role of volunteers. The study employed a qualitative research method approach using an exploratory research design. Social capital was utilised as a theoretical lens for the study. The sample consisted of eight participants. The study findings revealed that volunteer policies should be updated to provide equitable and inclusive opportunities for all prospective volunteers. It highlights the necessity of developing more practical skills and providing emotionally supportive training, especially for young people. It also suggests utilising social media more effectively to recruit volunteers, build networks, and promote equitable access and community involvement.
