Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns have significantly impacted the work environment, increasing remote and hybrid work practices. Remote work has been an adjustment for managers and their subordinates, presenting various challenges. COVID-19 has repositioned employee performance since hybrid work has become more popular. Previous research looked at remote or hybrid work regarding well-being and balancing work and home commitments. Performance management is crucial as individual performance impacts organisational performance. The study explores the impact of remote work on performance management practices, highlighting the challenges of performance practices in this new work environment. Workplace seclusion, poor communication, family interruptions, overwork, and work-related stress significantly influence employee performance. The study used qualitative research to gather data from nine banking sector employees, including managers, who have adopted remote and hybrid work practices since the COVID-19 pandemic.
The study highlights the crucial role of effective communication in performance management, particularly in hybrid work settings, suggesting that successful management relies on clear communication between managers and employees. In addition, managers must communicate performance expectations and proactively provide employees feedback. Regular check-ins, clear goals, and progress updates are crucial for performance management in remote and hybrid work settings. The study also indicates that team meetings are crucial for performance management in hybrid work settings, promoting unity, trust, and accountability through collaboration, communication, and feedback among team members. This research presents valuable knowledge to human resource professionals concerning the significance of continual performance assessment and regular one-on-one meetings between managers and employees. Finally, this study provides valuable insights for future management practices, enhancing organisations' ability to manage performance in an ever-changing work environment.
