Abstract

The traditional retail banking industry faces intense competition from emerging fi-nancial technologies. The competition has triggered the growth of digital transfor-mation initiatives. One of the emerging technology trends driving digital transfor-mation projects in today's organisations is robotic process automation (RPA). Fi-nancial institutions that embrace RPA operate in volatile environments marked by rapid change and intense rivalry. Software development projects undertaken in volatile environments may succeed better with an agile methodology. However, project management and software development literature indicate a very high fail-ure rate of information technology (IT) and software projects. The problem of high software project failure rates, due to poor project management, also extends to RPA projects. The methodology applied in this study to address RPA projects' high failure rates is a quantitative research approach using survey questionnaires as a strategy for data collection. The results show that organisational and people factors significantly influence the success of RPA projects. The study identified essential criteria for selecting processes suitable for RPA, such as high transaction volumes and highly manual and repetitive process tasks. Lastly, the study highlights that creating documentation based on value is one of the essential agile practices in-fluencing project success.The findings of this study offer practice-oriented recom-mendations to support the effective implementation of RPA projects.
