Abstract
In the realm of contemporary health care, fostering inclusivity and sensitivity among
nursing students is paramount, particularly in the provision of care to LGBTQIA+
individuals, who often confront distinct healthcare challenges. Despite strides in
LGBTQIA+ rights and awareness, there remains a gap in comprehending the
experiences and practices of nursing students attending to this diverse population.
To address this gap, this qualitative inquiry employed an exploratory-descriptive
approach, engaging individual semi-structured interviews with nursing students from
a private nursing education institution. Purposive sampling was employed until data
saturation was achieved with 16 participants. Thematic data analysis was then utilised,
yielding three overarching themes and eight corresponding categories.
Theme 1: Participants' expression of caring practice whilst caring for LGBTQIA+
individuals in a private hospital setting.
Theme 2: Participants' expression of deficient caring practices whilst caring for
LGBTQIA+ individuals in a private hospital setting.
Theme 3: Participants' expression of preparedness in caring for LGBTQIA+ individuals
in a private hospital setting.
Within the intimate confines of private hospital settings, nursing students navigated a
spectrum of caring practices while attending to LGBTQIA+ individuals. Some exhibited
profound empathy and sensitivity, fostering connections and trust with their patients
and advocating for their rights and dignity. Their expressions of care extended beyond
mere medical interventions, encompassing emotional support and advocacy.
Conversely, others grappled with deficiencies in their approach, encountering
challenges in comprehending and addressing the unique needs of LGBTQIA+
individuals. Instances of misunderstanding, insensitivity, and discrimination
underscored the complexities inherent in delivering inclusive care within private
hospital settings.
The recommendations derived from this research hold relevance for private nursing
education institutions, nursing management, leadership, and future researchers. They
centre on bolstering nursing students' competence and confidence in caring for
ix
LGBTQIA+ individuals in private hospital settings, with the overarching aim of
cultivating a supportive and inclusive healthcare environment.
