Abstract
South Africa has more than 7.2 million people living with HIV. In 2017, there were 50000 new HIV infections in the 10 - 19 years old age group (UNAIDS, 2019). This age group is of school going age. That is 50 000 young people, who attend school, were infected with HIV. They are infected with HIV during a time when the South African government is using the Life Orientation curriculum as a vehicle towards HIV and sex education (Smith & Harrison 2013; Ahmed et al., 2009). It was designed with the goal of providing learners with information about the transmission and prevention of HIV and other STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections), as well as reproduction, pregnancy, contraception, all forms of abuse – including domestic violence and issues of consent and negotiation when it comes to sexual intercourse (Smith & Harrison, 2013.
