Abstract
M.A.
This research is about witchcraft, sorcery, divination, religion and science. In gathering
the information, it became apparent that the above—mentioned subjects are interrelated
and inseparable from magic. It is therefore imperative to include them in this study. The
debate regarding the line of demarcation between religion and magic is also discussed in
this research. Literature relating to magic abounds in Tswana. Selected folktales referring to the use of magic are analysed. The function of magic must be considered within the framework of a people's entire cosmology, their world—view and perceptions. The purpose of this study is to illustrate that African oral literature is a fascinating subject worthy of study and further research. This is a very interesting but often neglected field.
