Abstract
This research aims to explore the blended learning strategies that Technical and Vocational Education and Training colleges used during the coronavirus pandemic. The research question was, "To what extent are blended learning strategies used in teaching and learning in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges?" It was important to know what blended learning strategies were used and to what extent they were used by lecturers in a TVET college during COVID-19 lockdowns and beyond. During the research, a qualitative approach was used. Participants were lecturers in a TVET college who were lecturing students during and beyond COVID-19 lockdowns. A qualitative survey was used, and semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect data. A thematic analysis was used to analyse the data after transcribing interview responses. Findings revealed that most participants in the study were familiar with blended learning, although they were not officially trained on how to implement it. Data revealed that only management was workshopped, or trained, on e-learning, as most participants called it. Data revealed that some participants were unaware of some blended learning strategies and did not use them, whereas the majority of participants used some blended learning strategies. This study contributed to the body of knowledge focused on the use of digital teaching and learning. Lecturers would learn more with the information on blended learning strategies. The TVET college management would devise professional development for technology integration in teaching and learning that focuses more on teaching strategies. Other related studies focused on technological resources, skills, and curriculum needs for TVET colleges in South Africa and in establishing perceptions of TVET college lecturers towards digital learning, but this study focused more on teaching and learning using blended learning strategies.
