Abstract
In this study I focus on a single child - a girl child named Kgothi - who is growing up on a farm in the North West Province. Kgothi’s home language is Setswana, however she attends the Afrikaans class in a parallel medium school with an English and an Afrikaans stream. This individual case study was aimed at investigating how Kgothi learned to read Afrikaans over the first 18 months in a formal school environment and to look further into those aspects of her environment that impact her reading....
