Abstract
Abstract : This research was conducted to investigate the critical issues within the transfer processes that affect the successful delivery of inter-firm transfers of technology, from other countries to South Africa. In this case, the technology was transferred from an Austrian plant to a South African plant under the same company group. The literature review researched critical issues within technology transfer processes such as planning, implementation, performance, technology development & management, plant technology, plant culture and conditions at recipient plant. The reviewed literature has revealed issues that influence the transfer project such as timing, lack of involvement of recipient project team, poor performance, lack of development and innovation, and lack of knowledge standardisation. Random surveys and individual interviews were performed to collect data. The survey of 32 participants were conducted from various South African industrial sectors; Rail – OEM (Original Equipment manufacturer), Rail – component manufacturer, Automotive – OEM (Original Equipment manufacturer), and others. The survey data (graphs and tables) were analysed to find a gap. The gap findings were used in interviewing few subject matter experts on technology transfer projects. Survey and interviews were used to validate the findings. Research indicated that the South African plant has some challenges in technology transfer projects, issues of funding availability, inter-company agreements, the prices influenced by exchanges rates, availability of expatriates from donor, key personnel involvement in critical processes of transfer project, expectations regarding transfer objectives and knowledge standardisation. However, it was concluded that proper guidelines and processes need to be done between the South African plant and transferor, and with intervention of government support.
