Abstract

Internal combustion engines -- Testing Engineering laboratories -- Equipment and supplies Automobiles -- Motors -- Testing
Engine test benches measure metrics such as speed, torque, and power to evaluate an engine's real-time performance before it is installed in a vehicle. These test benches are an essential component of a thermodynamics module at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) that exposes students to the automotive industry. However, the test benches at UJ's Doornfontein campus, which were erected in the early 1990s, are out of date and need to be upgraded to match current industry requirements. Using qualitative methodology, this research gathered data through discussions and observations of professionals in the field. A review of the literature was done, utilizing the findings of researchers such as A. Martyr and M.A. Plint. The literature research provided valuable insights that aided in developing a solution to enhance the test bench's knowledge base and handle the required improvements. Site visits provided more understanding of different industry test benches by looking at their frame designs and performance indicators. The study brought to light the shortcomings of the current test bench, which is constrained by antiquated equipment and unable to perform advanced tests like vibration analysis or crank angle measurement. Improvements such as installing thermocouples, pressure transducers, and a data collecting system were found to be necessary by the research. The investigation was aided by Nissan's donation of a 2022 Navara engine, which made it necessary to upgrade the engine frame in order to make room for the engine. After evaluating several design possibilities for the test bench construction, the best option was chosen in accordance with the test bench specifications and expert opinion. The significance of this study lies in its ability to improve student learning experiences and increase exposure to the automotive sector, all while giving the institution access to an updated test bench. Future research is advised to build equipment, buy instruments, and speak with an engine test bench specialist. The system should be remotely monitored, a preventative maintenance schedule should be created to protect the installed equipment, users should be trained, and a feedback loop should be established for ongoing enhancements.
