Abstract
Local government represents the last line of defence for citizens with regards to matters service delivery as services provided at this sphere of government impact their day-to-day lives. These“services, among others, include refuse collection, sanitation, water, libraries provision and maintenance of recreational facilities and infrastructure such as roads. It is therefore imperative that project managers responsible for these functions possess the requisite skills and expertise (including best practice) in the planning, delivery and monitoring of such services. Infrastructure projects and their development represents a significant component of local governments that facilitates their operations and achievement of their purposes. This research investigated the project management practices and their impact on the success of infrastructure projects based on the case of the City of Johannesburg. This was mixed research examining project management practices and their impact on the performance of infrastructure projects based on a case study of the City of Johannesburg. Based on the results obtained from the research the project management practices were identified have a significant impact on the success or failure of the infrastructure projects of the organisation. As a result, enhancement of the project management practices of the CoJ would result in enhanced infrastructure project success. Based on the research findings recommendations were made to management and leadership of the CoJ and if they are taken into”consideration will likely improve project management within the organisation as well as the success of its infrastructure projects.
