Abstract
This study interrogated the implications of the Russia-Ukraine War on international security, alliances, and global order. This war has brought back military conflict in Europe and has resulted in devastating humanitarian consequences on a scale never seen since the end of World War II. This study used a qualitative research methodology and employed desktop research, in which data was collected using primary and secondary data. The data collected was analysed through a thematic data analysis, and the theoretical frameworks employed were neo-realism and liberalism. The study began with an overview of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, followed by an analysis of the implications of the war on international security, alliances and global order. The findings of the study revealed that the war had undermined the post-Cold War security order and heightened global insecurities. Following Russia’s invasion, the West responded with coordinated sanctions and efforts to isolate Moscow from the international community. While this demonstrated unity among the West, the war had also exposed internal divisions and divergent policies among Western countries. In response, Russia had sought ties with non-Western partners, including China, Iran, and North Korea, thus undermining the West's efforts to isolate it from the international community. These developments have resulted in the fragmentation of the US-led global order. The energy and food supply disruptions due to the war have revealed the risk of interdependency. This war also exposed the EU’s over dependency on Russian energy. The war is a blatant violation of international law, and has exposed the limitations of international institutions in preventing and mediating wars, particularly when major powers with veto powers are involved. In conclusion this war challenged the liberal international order and has shown the vulnerabilities of the US-led global order. The Russia-Ukraine War is still ongoing, and there is no specific time frame for its end, meaning the full consequences of the war remain uncertain.
