The purpose of this study is to describe guidelines for the integration of the primary health
care approach into a Community Nursing Science curriculum in a Nursing College in
Gauteng Province. According to the South African Government, health worker training and community health require that a nurse in training must be comprehensively prepared to function independently in the primary health care setting. The existing nurse training for a comprehensive basic diploma is based on curative services rather than on the community. This creates a gap in that the primary health care approach is not adequately integrated into a Community Nursing Science Curriculum. There is a need to describe guidelines for the integration of the primary health care approach into a Community Nursing Science Curriculum in a Nursing College in Gauteng. This study is qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual in nature, with the purpose of describing guidelines for the integration of the primary health care approach into a Community Nursing Science Curriculum. The purpose was served by conducting the study in three phases and the following objectives were formulated: To explore and describe the perceptions of community nurses regarding the integration ofthe primary health care approach into a Community Nursing Science Curriculum in a Nursing College in Gauteng.
To explore and describe the perceptions of nurse educators regarding the integration ofthe primary health care approach into a Community Nursing Science Curriculum in a Nursing College in Gauteng. To describe guidelines for the integration of the primary health care approach into a Community Nursing Science curriculum for a Nursing College in Gauteng. The study was conducted with the Nursing for the Whole Person Theory (Oral Roberts University Anna Vaughn School of Nursing, 1990:136-142; RAU, 1994:NWPT) as a point of departure. The functional approach (Rotes, 1994:12) in nursing research was utilised as the described guidelines will be used to improve Community Nursing Science theory and practice.
