Abstract
This study seeks to explore the effect of contextual factors in shaping team effectiveness and
project success with an objective of confirming that managing projects in modern
environments is complex. Despite the emphasis on the significance of team dynamics and
its relation to the results of the project in the literature, empirical studies of the role of
different contextual factors and their moderating effect on the relationship between the two
are lacking Therefore, this study aims to address these literature gaps by assessing how
organizational culture, leadership structure, and communication affect the project outcomes
so as to improve project management practices. The research aims to investigate, assess, and
explore the contextual delay factors of projects within the South African electricity company.
The research will utilise a qualitative approach, which will involve the utilisation of a semistructured
survey to identify trends, patterns, and areas for improvement with regard to how
contextual factors shape team effectiveness and project success. These survey questionnaires
integrate both structured questions and open-ended questions. The survey will be distributed
to participants involved in projects within the National Electricity Utility Company,
targeting employees of the utility as the study population. This form of survey research
allowed the numeric description of patterns, perceptions, and attitudes of a targeted
population that can be used for generalising hypothesis.
The study findings highlighted strengths and weaknesses of the four themes of adaptability,
clarity, training, and accountability. The results showed the high mean values for adaptability
and clarity in the survey, which confirmed that these are key contextual factors to project
success. The survey responses reflected similar patterns, with accountability having a
moderate mean value, indicating that perceptions of accountability varied. The study
findings highlight applicable information for improving project management in South
African electricity utilities.
