Abstract
Artificial intelligence, advanced analytics, robots, and the Internet of Things (IoT) comprise the
fourth wave of the industrial revolution on a global scale. Research indicates that the progressive
technologies involved in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) are reorganizing the entire
production system by converting centralized and analogue workflows to digital and decentralized
production processes. This study aimed “to investigate the implementation of the Fourth Industrial
Revolution in the Oil and gas industry in South Africa. The study is a Systematic Literature Review
in nature.” "The literature is evaluated in accordance with the study's aim and objectives, and data
is analysed using Thematic Content Analysis in this study.
The study's main finding is that companies in the "Oil and Gas" "Industry are currently being
redesigned by the new industry 4.0 wherein traditional production and manufacturing methods
are at the edge of a digital transformation. The study further finds that the oil and gas industry has
experienced a massive upgrade in terms of technological enhancement. The study finds that the
implementation of the Fourth Industrial Revolution in the oil and gas industry, as the leader of the
traditional energy sector, is currently undergoing a difficult transition period. Therefore, the study
recommends that as part of implementing industry 4.0, the oil and gas industry can make oil and
gas production more efficient, environmentally friendly, and safer, as well as make the oil and gas
industry chain more understandable and transparent. It can be concluded that the study has
answered the research questions about the implementation of the Fourth Industrial Revolution on
the oil and gas industry.”
