Abstract
On 1 January 2019, the national minimum wage (NMW), which covered all sectors of the formal economy, was introduced in South Africa. The minimum wage was initially set at R20 per hour, equating to R3500 a month for workers working 40 hours a week and R3900 a month for workers working 45 hours a week. This wage applies to all sectors except for farmworkers, domestic workers, and workers in the Expanded Public Work Programme (EPWP). The minimum wages for these sectors were initially set at R18, R15 and R11 per hour respectively (National Minimum wage Act, 2018). In March 2020 there was a slight increase in the NMW to R20.76 per hour, and for farmworkers R18.68, domestic workers R15.57 and the EPWP R11.42 per hour (South African Government,2020)...
