Abstract

Body image disturbance-Treatment Eating disorders-Treatment Self
This study explores group narrative art therapy as a weight-neutral approach for individuals struggling with significant body criticism. The research highlights the importance of rejecting diet culture and weight stigma, examining group art therapy sessions that focus on characters embodying the Body Critic, the Younger Self, and the Body nurturer. The findings suggest that a weight-neutral perspective within narrative art therapy is beneficial for those dealing with high levels of body criticism. The therapy group provided a supportive environment, offering containment, although there were occasional challenges with over-identification. Future studies should explore potential barriers to accessing art therapy for more diverse South African populations and consider if systemic factors limit participation in art therapy spaces.
