Abstract
The main objective of this study was to discover the leadership capabilities that are required to promote good governance and sustainable development in the South African public sector. Strong leadership capabilities determine the development trajectory of a country. The decisions, whether good or bad, taken by public sector leaders form the cornerstone of the sustainable development pathways, has implications for good governance in a country. Consequently, the leadership variables that this study honed-in on, was sustainable development and good governance in the South African public sector. A qualitative research approach was applied in which primary data was gathered through semi-structured interviews and secondary data was gathered from a detailed analysis of academic journals, books, internet sources, legislation, published and unpublished theses. Participants deemed suitable by the researcher for the study were purposively selected to be interviewed. The results showed that effective leadership in the South African public sector requires transparency and consultation with stakeholders in decision-making processes to foster sustainable development and to promote good governance.
