Abstract

This study investigated the integration of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors into investment decision-making. As investors face pressure to align portfolios with ethical, regulatory, and risk management imperatives, the study examined the frameworks and standards guiding ESG integration, the challenges associated with data consistency, and the implications for investment performance. A mixed methods research design was adopted utilising qualitative and quantitative data. Secondary qualitative data were collected from ESG frameworks, regulatory guidelines, and industry reports, which were analysed thematically to identify patterns in adoption, compliance, and gaps in existing standards. Quantitative data were obtained from ESG disclosure scores and fund performance statistics funds from the South African market. Descriptive statistics, trend analysis, correlation, and regression analysis were used to evaluate the relationship between ESG performance and financial outcomes. The results revealed that ESG integration contributes positively to long-term sustainability, risk mitigation, and investor confidence. Regression analysis indicated a generally negative relationship between ESG scores and investment returns, particularly in funds aligned with robust sustainability practises. However, the study also identified persistent barriers, including inconsistent reporting standards, limited data comparability across industries and regions, and the prevalence of “greenwashing”, which collectively undermine the reliability of ESG metrics. This research contributes to the growing body of literature on sustainable finance by providing empirical evidence from emerging and global markets on the practical benefits and challenges of ESG integration. It recommends the need for harmonised reporting standards, improved data quality, and greater investor education to strengthen accountability and transparency in sustainable investing.
