Abstract
South Africa has over 6291 registered medical technologists (MTs) in the healthcare industry, particularly in pathology. Amongst the 6291 registered MTs, we also have Medical Technology (MT) trainers with over five years of PG experience who are responsible for training and transferring necessary skills to MTs. The study explores the perceptions of Medical Technologist (MT) trainers towards Medical Laboratory Scientists (MLS) in private pathology laboratories in Gauteng, South Africa. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with twelve participants. In the findings, we expect the following aspects in line with the study objectives, which are Analogous perceptions between MLS and MT; Distinction between MT and MLS Qualifications; Requisite advocation; Transformation and adaptation in emerging MLS qualification and Perceptions of MT trainers towards MLS in Private practice. Recommendations were proposed to enhance the effectiveness and synergy between MT trainers and MLS in the workplace.
