Abstract

Impact of hail on roofing material causes damage globally and poses a significant risk to the roofing materials. This dissertation presents the artificial hail impacts on the IBR 686 metal sheets with various thicknesses and grades. The objectives of this study were firstly; to investigate the damage made to the roof sheets by artificial hailstones, secondly; to determine the best performance and thickness of an IBR sheet profile in order to simulate various IBR profiles while meeting the stiffness criterion, and furthermore, to identify the effective way to sustain the longer life span of the sheet material. The experimental lab test was conducted using the dynamic pneumatic gun to launch artificial hailstones of varying diameters (18.5, 35.2, and 43.3, mm) onto samples of IBR 686 sheets of various thicknesses (0.46 mm, and 0.54mm) and grades (G300, and G550). The numerical experiments were conducted using Finite Element Model (FEM) through Abaqus Explicit software. It was discovered that the experimental lab results and those from the Finite Element Model differed minimally because some of the ice balls had cracks and others had air trapped inside of them. According to the current study, there is an inverse relationship between the yield strength and dent depth brought on by ice ball impact. Moreover, it was found that the G300 IBR sheet which has a 0.46 mm thickness is the most susceptible to hail impact.
