Abstract
This study is aimed at examining the challenges experienced by community development workers (CDWs) as they facilitate initiatives and play their developmental role in service delivery in the Angelo Informal Settlement in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng province. The study investigated the experiences of CDWs, including the challenges they came across in their work linked to service delivery in Angelo informal settlement in Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. Purposive sampling was employed, applying a qualitative research approach and explorative descriptive research design. Data was collected using face to face interviews and analysed using thematic data analysis to extract common themes from the interviews. The study revealed a gap in optimising the noble idea of the community development model and the role of CDWs as intended at the inception of this as a national policy. The study showed that there is a gap in the developmental intervention which need to be optimised to improve the effectiveness of the CDWs’ role in the community and service delivery is a complex challenge that has many key links that need professional capacity and needs an inclusive approach.
