Examining evidence for a technical tradition in large cutting tool production at Wonderboom

Abstract

Wonderboom is an open-air Stone Age site in Gauteng, South Africa, situated in a shallow quartzitic valley within the Magaliesberg near the Apies River. This study employs diacritical reading and 3D geometric morphometric (3DGMM) analyses to examine large cutting tools (LCTs) from Wonderboom, focusing on the degree of procedural and morphological standardisation, to investigate an underlying technical tradition. Unlike earlier descriptive analyses, this research reconstructs reduction sequences in high resolution and utilises 3D GMM to quantify shape variation in LCTs to examine the uniformity of production processes. The Wonderboom LCTs are further compared with samples from the Cave of Hearths, a later Acheulean site, and Rietputs 15, an earlier Acheulean site, providing a framework for understanding the range of procedural and morphological variation across time and space. I hypothesise that the LCTs from Wonderboom are highly standardised, and their designs were socially transmitted, thus representing a technical tradition at the site. The results show that the Wonderboom assemblage displays repeated patterns of technological , which were identified as well as standardised retouch strategies and thus allowed for the separation of artefacts into distinct ‘techno-functional’ categories. Geometric morphometric results show that handaxes from Wonderboom exhibit distinct morphological traits from Cave of Hearths and Rietputs 15, while cleavers show greater morphological overlap between Wonderboom and Rietputs 15. Taken together, these findings will position Wonderboom within a broader Acheulean landscape of socially transmitted, yet contextually flexible, technological behaviour. Although constrained by sample size and the absence of absolute dating, this study makes a valuable contribution to ongoing discussions about Acheulean cognition and social transmission. Wonderboom thus provides a valuable case study in tracing the material signatures of a socially learned technical tradition, showing that Acheulean innovation was both communal and situational, standardised in concept yet variable in execution.
