Abstract
In the realm of the global football industry, non-league football clubs, which operate outside the confines of professional and semi-professional leagues, are essential incubators for football talent and community development. This minor dissertation, diverging from research focused on the elite football industry, explores the lived realities of a non-league football club situated inside the intricate social fabric of Johannesburg, South Africa. The comprehensive qualitative case study method employed, supported by in-depth semi-structured interviews with the managerial personnel, elucidates how the club leverages opportunity recognition through community needs identification, grassroots scanning, and informal listening, positioning youth development as a central strategic pillar to foster sustainable growth.
Grounded in the theoretical frameworks of Opportunity Recognition, the Resource-Based View, Stakeholder Management, and Social Capital Theory, the study demonstrates a significant collaboration between proactive community outreach, grassroots development, and technology adaptation. The findings reveal that digital innovation, particularly social media engagement and content strategies, plays a vital role in enhancing visibility and fostering community bonds, despite resource constraints. Notably, the club’s reliance on leadership-driven financial dependency and limited scalability presents significant challenges to diversification efforts, including sponsorship, merchandise sales, and coaching clinics. The analysis underscores the importance of community integration, with local partnerships and social initiatives contributing to a distinctive value proposition and community-based branding.
Furthermore, the study highlights the club’s aspirations for self-sufficiency, a robust football academy, and ongoing community engagement as pathways towards sustainable growth. Resource limitations, such as inadequate facilities and financial hardship, emerge as critical barriers to entrepreneurial-driven growth. This study provides practical insights for policymakers and practitioners aiming to leverage community-based sports initiatives to enhance social cohesion, encourage community engagement, and address persistent socioeconomic issues in marginalised communities.
