Abstract

Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) are the backbone of South Africa’s economy, driving job creation, poverty alleviation, and economic growth. Despite their importance, many SMMEs face challenges in adopting Business Intelligence (BI) solutions that can enhance decision-making and improve competitiveness. This study delves into the heart of this challenge, uncovering the barriers that prevent South African SMMEs from adopting BI and proposing a practical, actionable solution to bridge the gap. Through a mixed-methods approach, combining in-depth interviews with SMME owners and managers, and a wide-ranging survey, this research reveals a disconnect between the recognized value of BI and its actual use. High costs and limited technical expertise emerge as key hurdles, stifling the ability of SMMEs to compete in an increasingly data-driven world. In response, this study introduces the BASIC Framework, a tailored roadmap designed specifically for South African SMMEs. This framework focuses on four pillars: aligning business strategy with BI goals, leveraging affordable and scalable technology, enhancing data integration, and fostering effective change management. The BASIC Framework is more than just a theoretical model, it’s a practical guide for SMMEs to overcome adoption challenges and harness the power of data-driven decision-making. By implementing this framework, SMMEs can boost operational efficiency, drive innovation, and secure a competitive edge in their industries. For policymakers and industry stakeholders, this research offers critical insights into the unique challenges faced by South African SMMEs and underscores the need for targeted interventions to support their growth. Ultimately, this study is a call to action. It highlights the transformative potential of BI for South African SMMEs and provides a clear pathway for these enterprises to thrive in a rapidly evolving business landscape. By embracing data-driven strategies, SMMEs can not only improve their performance but also play a more significant role in South Africa’s economic development.
