Abstract
This study investigated educators’ perceptions of the causes of poor discipline among learners at rural boarding high schools. The aim of this study was to understand educators’ perceptions of poor discipline among learners at rural boarding high schools, and suggest strategies that educators could use to improve discipline in these schools. The theoretical framework that informed this study was Gordon’s international model of effective training (2003). A literature study was conducted on various issues related to disciplinary problems in rural boarding schools. From the literature review it was evident that rural boarding high schools are plagued by poor discipline. A qualitative research approach with a phenomenological research design was used. This study was set in the Interpretivist paradigm. The study was conducted in three rural boarding high schools in the Eastern Cape.
